CRCHI’s latest slurry shield machine set to empower Guangdong water resources project

The newly designed slurry balance shield machine “Yuehai Huanbei No. 8,” jointly created by CRCHI and China Railway 12th Bureau Group, has been unveiled in Changsha China. This impressive TBM measures 135 meters in length and boasts a tunneling diameter of 6.28 meters. It marks the debut of the first shield machine for the entire Huanbei Gulf Guangdong Water Resources Allocation Project, where it will be employed for the construction of the D1 section tunnel.

The D1 section tunnel spans a length of 10.19 kilometers, with the “Yuehai Huanbei No. 8” shield machine responsible for an extensive 3908.3 meters of excavation within this stretch. This segment primarily traverses geological formations that include highly weathered metamorphic sandstone and brecciated rock, as well as limestone strata, involving a total of 25 fault zones. Navigating through such diverse and challenging geological conditions, encompassing hard and soft rock layers as well as dense water-rich fault zones, brings inherent construction risks like shield instability and blockages in the excavation chamber.

To address these project challenges, CRCHI’s research and development team incorporated several advanced and innovative technologies into the “Yuehai Huanbei No. 8” shield machine. Notably, a novel “multi-channel + multi-circuit” slag removal mode was implemented, which effectively resolves issues of chamber and pipe blockages caused by larger particles getting trapped at the bottom of the excavation chamber due to fault zones. This ingenious design ensures the shield machine’s rapid progress and safety during excavation in complex geological conditions.
